KENORA – The City of Kenora is scheduled to take possession of the Kenricia Hotel today, the deadline given to the downtown building’s long-term residents to leave as the city advances a heritage redevelopment project.
The relocation status of the residents could not be confirmed from public sources by the 8 a.m. EST newsdesk cutoff. However sources tell NetNewsLedger that successful relocation of residents has been completed.
Housing advocates had raised concerns that Kenora’s limited rental supply would leave some residents without a suitable alternative.
The city says it is working with the Kenora District Services Board to continue to explore housing solutions and has committed to supporting tenants during the transition. Its project page does not provide a resident-by-resident outcome or say whether everyone had secured housing before the possession date.
Kenora began the expropriation process in July 2025. The Ontario Land Tribunal held a hearing of necessity in February and issued its report in April. Council approved moving ahead May 28, and the city served the owners with a notice of expropriation Aug. 6.
The city issued a request for proposals Aug. 19 for the purchase and rehabilitation of the 1910 hotel. The submission deadline was Oct. 15. No preferred proponent or final redevelopment plan was identified on the city’s project page by Friday morning.
Kenora has said the redevelopment is intended to preserve the landmark’s heritage character, attract investment and support downtown renewal. Those objectives now meet an immediate housing question: where the people who made the hotel their home will live after the city takes possession.
The city should confirm Friday whether possession proceeded, how many residents required assistance, whether temporary or permanent placements were found and when council will consider any redevelopment proposal.
