THUNDER BAY — MINING NEWS — Falling metal prices, major project decisions and fresh exploration results are shaping the mining outlook as the week begins.
Internationally, a proposed investment in Nevada’s tungsten industry highlights the push to secure strategic metals. Nationally, Canada is courting global capital while Cariboo moves toward full-scale construction. In Northwestern Ontario, Red Lake and Dryden exploration results remain important stories to follow.

Lithium refers to China’s battery-grade lithium carbonate benchmark, not spodumene concentrate. Trading Economics describes its uranium indicator as based on OTC and CFD instruments.
Why Chromite Needs a Different Pricing Approach
Chromite is the mineral source of chromium, which is used in ferrochrome production and steel alloys, particularly stainless steel. Chromite ore and ferrochrome are different products; their prices are not interchangeable.
There is no single universal chromite quotation. Grade, product specifications and delivery terms matter. Fastmarkets maintains a weekly South African UG2/MG concentrate index on a 42% Cr₂O₃ basis, with a specified range of 40% to 44%, delivered CIF China. CIF means cost, insurance and freight.
The public benchmark page identifies the specifications but does not display a current assessment. Rather than insert an old quotation or a different product’s price, this report marks the current chromite figure as unverified.
For Ontario project watchers, a delivered-China benchmark should not be treated as the price a Canadian mine would receive at its gate. Transportation, processing and product quality must also be considered.
International: Gold Faces Interest-Rate Pressure
Gold weakened Monday as higher oil prices and stronger-than-expected American inflation increased expectations of a U.S. Federal Reserve rate increase.
Reuters reported spot gold at US$4,271.59 per ounce in its September 14 report, down 1.8%. That differs from the chart’s benchmark because the instruments and observation times differ.
For Canadian producers, exchange rates, operating costs and production performance also determine margins.
International: Springer Tungsten Investment Targets Strategic Supply
Blue Moon Metals, The Elmet Group and EQ Resources announced a binding letter agreement, signed September 11, outlining transactions intended to redevelop the Springer Tungsten Complex in Nevada.
The arrangements contemplate approximately US$150 million in investment from Elmet, with another US$25 million set aside by Elmet and EQ for standby requirements.
The proposed structure includes a processing joint venture, an equity investment, concentrate supply arrangements and a tungsten prepayment facility. Blue Moon would retain the mine and mill.
The agreement is a milestone, but the contemplated transactions are not described here as completed. Expected restarts in late 2027 for the mine and mill, and the second half of 2028 for the processing plant, remain company forecasts.
For Northwestern Ontario developers, the lesson is that strategic-mineral projects need credible processing and customer arrangements, not simply a mineral occurrence. Blue Moon release.
International Exploration: Royal Road Starts Colombian Drilling
Royal Road Minerals announced that diamond drilling has begun at Güíntar, part of its gold-copper-silver exploration portfolio in Antioquia, Colombia.
The company also reported recent continuous rock-chip sampling at Algodona returning 36 metres averaging 2.14 grams of gold per tonne and 6.95 grams of silver per tonne.
That is a sampling-line length, not a new drill intercept. True widths have not been established. The work helps identify exploration targets but does not establish an economically mineable deposit. Royal Road release.
National: Canada Courts Global Mining Capital
The Canada Investment Summit is taking place in Toronto on September 14 and 15, bringing together global investors, Canadian business leaders and public-sector representatives.
Ottawa describes the event as part of its ambition to encourage C$1 trillion in total investment over five years. That is a national objective, not money already secured or a mining-only commitment. Government summit information.
Canadian Mining Journal reported that more than one-third of the government’s 167 showcased investment opportunities involve minerals and mining. Canadian Mining Journal report.
For Northwestern Ontario, the test is whether investor interest becomes financing, infrastructure agreements and actual construction.
National: Cariboo Receives a Construction Decision
Osisko Gold Group announced a positive board decision to proceed with construction of its Cariboo Gold Project in central British Columbia.
The company estimates its remaining go-forward capital obligation at C$990 million and reported C$837 million in cash and equivalents. Its larger funding presentation includes both available and proposed capital.
A Trafigura affiliate has agreed to a US$30 million equity investment, subject to exchange approvals. A potential prepayment facility of up to US$120 million remains based on non-binding terms.
Osisko expects first gold in the first quarter of 2029 and commercial production in the second half of that year. These are forecasts, not guarantees. Osisko release.
National Critical Minerals: Ucore Reports Additional Funding
Ucore Rare Metals announced an executed funding modification worth US$4.6 million, bringing its stated total funding under the relevant U.S. government agreement to US$27 million.
The award supports samarium and gadolinium process development in Kingston, Ontario, and equipment deployment at its planned Louisiana Strategic Metals Complex.
This is a processing-development milestone, not an announcement of commercial production at the Louisiana facility. Ucore release.
Financing and Deal Watch
Goldgroup Mining increased its proposed private placement from approximately US$75 million to US$125 million. Closing is expected around September 30, subject to required approvals. Proceeds are intended for existing projects, working capital and potential acquisitions; the announcement does not establish a specific new acquisition. Goldgroup release.
Mako Mining and Sailfish Royalty announced a non-binding proposal for a 20-year corporate gold stream. Proposed consideration includes 70 million Sailfish shares, which would give Mako approximately 49% ownership following completion.
The related-party transaction requires a definitive agreement, regulatory and shareholder approvals, and independent review. It is neither a completed merger nor a completed streaming deal. Mako release.
Northwestern Ontario: Starratt-Olsen Delivers Gold Results
West Red Lake Gold’s September 10 release reported Starratt-Olsen surface drilling results including:
- WRL26-054: 16.16 grams of gold per tonne over 1.50 metres.
- WRL26-055: 5.16 grams per tonne over 4.50 metres, including 10.94 grams per tonne over 1.50 metres.
The higher-grade interval in WRL26-055 is contained within the broader interval. These are not separate lengths to add together.
The company completed approximately 4,100 metres in 12 holes. The release reported results from the first five holes.
Intervals are downhole lengths and gold values are uncapped. True thickness has not been calculated, although the company expects it to be at least 70% of downhole thickness based on observed intercept angles.
The results support further investigation of potential additional mineralization within the Madsen property, not a guaranteed new source of mine feed. West Red Lake Gold release.
Northwestern Ontario: Dryden Gold Advances Surface and Deeper Targets
Dryden Gold’s September 9 update reported Hyndman grab samples grading up to 31.20 grams of gold per tonne, with additional samples returning 18.10 and 5.38 grams per tonne.
Grab samples are selective rock samples. They do not establish a deposit’s average grade, width or economic value. Hyndman release.
Separately, the company’s August 31 drilling update reported 9.40 grams per tonne over 4.60 metres in DGR-073 at Spyglass, including 78.40 grams per tonne over 0.38 metres.
Dryden Gold reported extending the interpreted Spyglass zone to approximately 330 metres vertical depth. Vertical depth is not mineralized width: the assay intervals are drilled core lengths and true widths remain unknown.
The updates support additional exploration, not a declaration of a new mine. Spyglass drilling release.
Northwestern Ontario: First Mining Gains Index Exposure
First Mining Gold announced inclusion in the MVIS Global Junior Gold Miners Index, the benchmark underlying the VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF.
The change becomes effective at the close of trading on September 18. First Mining is advancing Springpole in Northwestern Ontario and Duparquet in Quebec.
Management expects greater visibility and improved trading liquidity. Those benefits are not guaranteed, and index inclusion does not provide mine construction financing or replace approvals. First Mining release.
Northeastern Ontario: Crawford Selects Equipment Suppliers
Canada Nickel selected Komatsu and SMS Equipment to supply the load-and-haul fleet and associated support equipment for its proposed Crawford project in the Timmins–Cochrane area.
The company expects purchases of more than 300 machines, with a current estimated value of C$1.5 billion, over the anticipated 40-year project life.
That is not an immediate purchase or a fully executed C$1.5-billion contract. Canada Nickel expects definitive equipment, support and related fleet-financing agreements in the first quarter of 2027. It says it is advancing toward a construction decision in 2027. Canada Nickel release.
Northern Ontario: Moose Cree and KAP Establish a Framework
KAP Minerals and Moose Cree First Nation announced a memorandum of understanding concerning the proposed Kapuskasing Critical Minerals Processing Hub.
The project would redevelop the historic Agrium phosphate mine, approximately 40 kilometres southwest of Kapuskasing, within Moose Cree’s Homeland.
The MOU establishes a process to explore environmental and cultural considerations, employment, business opportunities and possible equity participation. It is not a final equity agreement or construction approval. KAP release.
What RockHawks Should Watch Next
The next meaningful milestones are financing closings, definitive agreements, follow-up assays and construction decisions.
For Northwestern Ontario, today’s news points to continued exploration opportunities and competition for investment. Strong projects need sound geology, realistic costs, infrastructure access and durable relationships with Indigenous Nations.
A strong assay attracts attention. A well-financed, technically credible and responsibly developed project creates lasting value.
