Northwest Ontario Wildfire Update: No Active Fires Reported Across the Northwest Region

Wildland Forest Wildfire Update

THUNDER BAY – Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services says there are currently no active wildland fires in Ontario’s Northwest Region as of 5:30 PM CDT on April 13, 2026.

While the region remains clear of active fires, officials confirmed one new wildland fire since the previous update.

The fire, identified as Thunder Bay 1 (THU001), was confirmed on April 10. It was located about 3.7 kilometres south of Highway 588, between Frogportage Bay and Mallard Lake. Fire crews called the blaze out the same day after it was held to 0.1 hectares.

Officials say wildfire situation updates for the Northwest Region will now be issued twice weekly, with the next report scheduled for Thursday, April 16.

Fire Season Rules Remain in Effect

Even with no active fires burning in the region, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services is reminding the public that Ontario’s legislated fire season runs from April 1 to October 31, and outdoor fire rules are now in effect.

Residents are encouraged to avoid burning yard waste and woody debris when possible, and instead use alternatives such as composting or taking materials to a local landfill.

For those who must burn, officials stress that fires may only be started no earlier than two hours before sunset and must be fully extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise.

Anyone burning should always have the proper tools and enough water on hand to keep the fire under control.

People living within municipal boundaries are also being reminded to check with their local fire department for any burning restrictions or permit requirements before lighting an outdoor fire.

Reporting a Wildland Fire

To report a wildland fire:

  • North of the French and Mattawa rivers: call 310-FIRE (3473)
  • South of the French or Mattawa rivers: call 9-1-1

Officials are also encouraging the public to follow wildfire prevention tips and current fire information through @ONforestfires and @ONfeudeforet on social media.

Outlook

For now, Northwest Ontario remains in a stable position with no active wildland fires. However, with fire season now underway, residents are being urged to stay cautious and follow outdoor burning regulations closely.
