Wildfire Update

THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE UPDATE – A new wildfire has been confirmed in Northeast Ontario, as fire crews continue to monitor dry conditions across the region. As of 6:05 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, June 25, one new fire was reported, bringing the region’s active fire total to five.

The Northeast district has not been as active as the Northwest district this fire season. However conditions are currently ramping up.

The new fire, designated Chapleau 11 (CHA011), is located approximately 3 kilometres north of Woman River Provincial Park. It is estimated at 0.2 hectares in size and is currently not under control.

Fire Activity Summary – Northeast Region

  • 1 fire not under control

  • 1 fire being held

  • 1 fire under control

  • 2 fires under observation

The fire hazard is:

  • Low to moderate across northern sectors

  • Moderate to high throughout central and southern portions of the region

Dry and warming conditions in parts of northeastern Ontario are contributing to elevated wildfire risk, particularly in forested areas with dense underbrush. Residents are urged to check the Interactive Fire Hazard Map to stay informed about local conditions.

No Drone Zone Enforcement

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services reminds the public that flying drones near active wildfires is illegal and endangers the lives of pilots, crews, and first responders. Unauthorized drone activity can disrupt aerial suppression operations and delay firefighting efforts. Drones must be kept away from all fire zones.

Burning Regulations Still in Effect

With fire risk continuing, outdoor burning regulations remain in full force across Ontario:

  • Fires must only be ignited within two hours before sunset

  • All fires must be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise

  • Water and fire tools must be available on-site

Instead of burning, officials recommend using municipal landfills or composting to dispose of yard waste and woody debris. Violating burning regulations can lead to fines and cost recovery charges for fire suppression.

Visit Ontario.ca/fireprevention for the full set of outdoor burning rules.

Report Wildfires Immediately

If you spot a wildfire:

  • North of the French and Mattawa Rivers – Call 310-FIRE (3473)

  • South of the French or Mattawa Rivers – Call 9-1-1
