One New Fire Reported, Five Remain Active Across Northeast Ontario

THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE UPDATEA new wildfire has been confirmed in the Northeast Region, as dry conditions persist across parts of Ontario. The fire, designated Wawa 6 (WAW006), was discovered earlier today approximately 600 metres south of South Hammer Lake. It currently measures 0.3 hectares and is not under control.

According to Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services, five active wildfires are now burning across the Northeast Region:

  • 1 not under control

  • 1 being held

  • 1 under control

  • 2 being observed

Fire Hazard Conditions

While the northern parts of the region remain mostly low risk, central and southern areas range from low to high, depending on local weather and ground moisture. Of particular concern is a small pocket of extreme fire hazard near La Motte Provincial Park, located south of Timmins.

For real-time conditions and area-specific updates, residents can consult the Interactive Fire Hazard Map provided by the province.

Safety Reminder: No Drone Zone

The public is reminded that flying drones near active wildfires is illegal and dangerous. Drones pose a serious threat to aircraft and firefighting crews. Anyone caught operating a drone near a wildfire could face significant penalties.

Burning Regulations Remain in Effect

With summer conditions continuing to dry out forested areas, residents are urged to follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations when disposing of yard waste or woody debris. Safer alternatives like composting or municipal disposal are recommended.

If burning is necessary:

  • Fires may only be ignited two hours before sunset

  • They must be fully extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise

  • Always keep water and suppression tools at hand

Violations of burning regulations can result in fines or liability for firefighting costs.
