Sudbury – WILDFIRE UPDATE – The Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) has confirmed one new wildfire in the Northeast Region today, as fire activity continues to simmer in several zones amid high to extreme fire hazard conditions.

According to Evan Lizotte, Fire Information Officer, the new fire, Chapleau 9 (CHA009), spans 1 hectare and is located approximately 6 km north of Highway 667 and about 35 km southeast of Chapleau. As of the latest update, the fire is being held.

🔥 Active Fires in the Region

Currently, there are three active wildfires in the Northeast Fire Region:

  • 1 fire under control

  • 1 fire being held

  • 1 fire under observation

🔍 Fire Hazard Outlook

Fire danger remains primarily high across much of the Northeast Region. Specific conditions as of June 16:

  • Extreme hazard in Temiskaming Shores and east of Sudbury

  • Moderate hazard in the Sault Ste. Marie area

  • Low to moderate hazard along the James Bay coast

Residents are encouraged to monitor conditions in real-time using the province’s Interactive Fire Map.

🚫 No Drone Zone: Public Safety First

AFFES reminds the public that drones are strictly prohibited near wildland fires. Flying drones in active fire zones is dangerous and illegal, posing serious risks to firefighting aircraft and personnel. Always stay clear of active fire areas.

🔥 Outdoor Burning Rules

With fire risks elevated, AFFES urges residents to use caution with outdoor burning:

  • Burn only between two hours before sunset and two hours after sunrise

  • Always keep water and tools on hand

  • Consider safer alternatives like composting or landfill disposal

Review the full set of Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations before lighting any fire.
