Thunder Bay – NEWS – A Winnipeg driver will have to either walk, take the bus, or fly home after getting nabbed for Stunt Driving.
On the evening of June 3, 2025, Thunder Bay OPP officers conducting radar enforcement on Highway 11/17 in the Municipality of Shuniah observed a vehicle traveling at 150 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone.
A 35-year-old driver from Winnipeg was stopped and charged under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act with “Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform stunt – Excessive speed.”
Immediate Penalties
Under Ontario law, driving 50 km/h or more over the posted speed limit constitutes stunt driving. As a result, the driver’s license was suspended for 30 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
Legal Consequences
If convicted, penalties for stunt driving in Ontario include:
-
Fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000
-
Six demerit points
-
A possible jail term of up to six months
-
A license suspension of 1 to 3 years for a first offense
-

Insurance Impact
A stunt driving conviction can significantly affect insurance premiums. Drivers may be classified as high-risk, leading to increased rates or difficulty obtaining coverage. The conviction remains on the driving record for at least three years, influencing insurance assessments during that period.
Public Safety Reminder
Authorities urge all drivers to adhere to posted speed limits and drive responsibly to ensure the safety of all road users.
