UPDATE #1: Fatal Residential Fire in Sandy Lake First Nation – Investigation Concluded

SANDY LAKE, ON — May 28, 2025 – The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) has completed its investigation into the fatal residential fire that occurred in Sandy Lake First Nation on Thursday, May 22.

Officers from the Sandy Lake NAPS Detachment responded to reports of a structural fire during the afternoon hours. Tragically, one male youth was confirmed deceased, and an additional nine individuals sustained injuries related to smoke inhalation.

Multi-Agency Investigation Completed

The investigation involved a collaborative effort between:

  • NAPS Crime Unit

  • Ontario Provincial Police Forensic Identification Unit

  • Office of the Chief Coroner

  • Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office

Following a detailed examination, authorities have determined that the cause of the fire is not believed to be criminal in nature.

This matter is now considered private between the investigative team and the impacted families and community members.
