Air Quality Advisory Remains in Effect as Wildfire Smoke Drifts Through Early Monday

Warm and Sunny Week Ahead Once the Haze Clears

KENORA – WEATHER – Monday, May 26, 2025 – A Special Air Quality Statement remains in effect for Kenora, Grassy Narrows, and Whitedog First Nation this morning, as wildfire smoke from Manitoba continues to cause reduced visibility and poor air quality across the region. While skies are mainly clear, the atmosphere isn’t as fresh as it looks—at least not yet.

As of 5:00 AM CDT, Kenora Airport reported a temperature of 9.8°C with a dew point of 2.8°C, making for a moderate 62% humidity. Winds are blowing from the south-southeast at 8 km/h, and visibility is holding at 32 km—a sign the worst of the smoke may already be dispersing. Barometric pressure is at 102.6 kPa but falling, reflecting the transition from smoky skies to clearer conditions.

Today’s forecast is sunny with some local smoke this morning, which is expected to move westward by this afternoon, allowing for much clearer skies later in the day. Temperatures will rise to a warm high of 24°C, perfect for outdoor activities—once air quality improves. The UV index is 6, which is considered high, so sunscreen is still essential even with some haze overhead.

Tonight, skies stay clear with a low of 12°C—a mild and comfortable night across the region.

The Week Ahead: Sunshine, Warmth, and Cleaner Air

Tuesday through Thursday offers a classic Northwestern Ontario warm-up:

  • Tuesday: Mainly sunny, high of 25°C, low of 10°C

  • Wednesday: Sunny and warm with a high of 25°C, low of 12°C

  • Thursday: The warmest yet—sunny and 28°C, with a summer-like low of 16°C

It’s a great week to plan some time outdoors once the smoke clears today. Conditions look ideal for camping, fishing, or simply soaking up the sun—just keep an eye on local air quality this morning.

Health Reminder: Smoke Is Still a Risk Early Today

As the wildfire smoke persists into this morning, residents are urged to take precautions, especially if you’re part of a vulnerable group—this includes seniors, young children, people with heart or lung conditions, pregnant individuals, and anyone working outdoors.

Safety tips include:

  • Stay indoors with windows closed.

  • Use an air purifier if available.

  • Avoid strenuous activity outside.

  • Wear an N95 mask if you must go out.

  • Check on neighbours who may need assistance.

Even healthy individuals may experience eye irritation, headaches, or coughing due to the fine particles in wildfire smoke.

Wardrobe Suggestion

Start with a light sweater or jacket this morning—there’s a chill in the air. As the day warms, you’ll want breathable clothing and sun protection. And for now, keep an N95 mask handy if you’re heading outdoors early in the day.

Weather Trivia: Where There’s Smoke, There’s… the Jet Stream?

Did you know? Wildfire smoke doesn’t just drift locally—it can travel hundreds of kilometres thanks to the jet stream. In fact, smoke from fires in Western Canada has reached as far as Europe in recent years!
