THUNDER BAY – WEATHER UPDATE – It’s a chilling Victoria Day morning in Thunder Bay, where Mother Nature has pulled a classic northern Ontario move: sun in the forecast, but frost on the windshield.
Headed into the Netnewsledger studio in The Vault on Red River Road, it was nice having light gloves on this morning. A hot coffee didn’t hurt either, at least not as much as the Leafs getting raked over the coals in Game 7 last night.
As of 6:00 AM EDT, the temperature is sitting at -3.7°C with a wind chill of -6°C, enough to make you question whether it’s May or March.
Skies are mainly clear, visibility is excellent at 32 km, and pressure is rising at 102.7 kPa, a sign of continued fair weather. A light breeze from the north-northeast at 6 km/h is adding a crispness to the already frigid air.
Victoria Day Forecast: Cold Start, Sunny Finish
Despite the frosty kickoff, sunshine will dominate the day, and temperatures will rise to a high of 13°C. A light east wind around 20 km/h will develop this morning, making things feel cooler until late afternoon. The UV index hits a strong 7, so even if it feels chilly, don’t skip the sunscreen!
Tonight and the Week Ahead:
-
Tonight: Clear skies continue, with a low of +1°C and a steady east wind at 20 km/h.
-
Tuesday: Another sunny beauty, with a high of 14°C and gusty east winds up to 40 km/h.
-
Wednesday: More sunshine in store and a high of 16°C before clouds return in the evening with a 30% chance of showers.
While no official frost advisory is in effect, gardeners and green thumbs should take caution—this morning’s lows are cold enough to nip tender plants.
What to Wear:
Gloves and a warm jacket are a must this morning—don’t let that sun fool you. By the afternoon, you’ll be more comfortable in lighter layers, especially if you’re in the sun and sheltered from the breeze.
Weather Trivia – True to Its Name?
You’d think Thunder Bay would be known for booming skies, but today it’s all about crisp air and clear blue. However, the region does average 30 thunderstorm days a year, most of them still weeks away in late June through July.
