Impaired Driving Charge Laid After Late-Night Traffic Stop on Highway 17

ESPANOLA – REGIONAL CRIME REPORT — A traffic stop on Highway 17 in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township has led to impaired driving charges against a 61-year-old Massey woman.

On the night of Monday, May 5, 2025, around 11:30 p.m., officers from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a vehicle as part of a routine patrol. During the stop, officers noticed a strong odour of cannabis coming from the vehicle.

Further investigation determined the driver was impaired by drugs. The individual was arrested at the scene.

Charged:

  • Karen WILCOX, 61, of Massey, ON

Charges:

  • Operation While Impaired – Drugs

  • Drive Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available

  • Improper Number Plate Light

Wilcox has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Monday, June 2, 2025.

The OPP is reminding drivers across Northern Ontario that impaired is impaired — whether by alcohol or drugs. If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, you are urged to call 911 immediately.
