Thick as Pea Soup: Fog Rolls Over the North Shore of Lake Superior
Dense Fog Blankets Nipigon to Wawa — Caution Advised
Patchy, Thick, and Lingering: North Shore Wakes Up in a Cloud
Nipigon, Schreiber, Rossport, and Wawa, ON — April 11, 2025
If you’re waking up along the north shore of Lake Superior this morning and thinking someone stole the view — you’re not alone. Environment Canada has issued a Fog Advisory stretching from Nipigon to Wawa, including Rossport and Schreiber, warning of dense fog with near-zero visibility in many areas.
The advisory, issued early this morning at 4:53 AM EDT, notes that visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced, making travel downright dicey. This is especially true along highways and near the lake, where moisture from the big water helps keep that fog hanging like an over-friendly houseguest.
Conditions are expected to improve later this morning as the sun rises higher and starts to burn off the fog, but until then, travel with care. Use your headlights, take it slow, and keep extra space between you and the vehicle ahead — especially on those winding Superior-side stretches of Highway 17.
Though temperatures are on the mild side for early spring, the damp chill will make it feel cooler, so a light jacket with some water resistance is a good call — and don’t forget that hat if you’re heading out early. With moisture in the air, hair may also take on a life of its own, so be warned.
Here’s a little weather trivia for you to ponder while you wait for the fog to lift: Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the world, has such a cooling effect on nearby regions that it frequently creates localized fog conditions — especially in spring when the lake remains icy cold while the land begins to warm. This phenomenon is lovingly (or not-so-lovingly) dubbed “Lake Superior surprise fog.”
So if you’re headed out this morning, take it slow, stay safe, and enjoy the mysterious, misty beauty that only Lake Superior can conjure up.
