THUNDER BAY — April 10, 2025 — A residential blaze erupted Thursday morning in a duplex on Mathews Street, prompting a rapid response from Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR). Fire crews were dispatched at 10:48 AM to reports of smoke and flames visible from the structure.
When first responders arrived, smoke was pouring from every opening on the main floor, and flames were seen shooting from a kitchen window at the rear of the building.
A lone occupant, who had exited the home before firefighters arrived, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and later transported to hospital for further care.
Crews initiated an aggressive exterior attack to contain the fire, followed by an interior push to extinguish the flames and search the residence.
While the fire was brought under control quickly, the main floor suffered significant fire damage, and smoke damage affected the entire building.
TBFR is once again reminding Thunder Bay residents of the critical importance of working smoke alarms and practicing home fire escape plans. These safety measures are essential for surviving residential fires, which can escalate in seconds.
As fire risks increase with fluctuating spring temperatures and indoor heating use, TBFR continues to advocate for community awareness and preparedness.
