CARAS revokes Buffy Sainte-Marie’s JUNO Awards and Hall of Fame status, citing non-compliance with eligibility rules
TORONTO – ENTERTAINMENT: The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced the revocation of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s JUNO Awards and her induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, citing non-compliance with eligibility requirements.
The decision follows a comprehensive review and consultations with the CARAS Indigenous Music Advisory Committee. A key factor was Sainte-Marie’s recent confirmation that she is not Canadian. CARAS emphasized that the move is not a reflection of her artistic contributions but rather a step to uphold the integrity of its awards, which recognize Canadian artists.
Sainte-Marie has been a prominent advocate for Canadian music, and CARAS acknowledged her past contributions. However, the organization reaffirmed its mandate to celebrate and honour Canadian artists who meet eligibility criteria.
CARAS remains committed to supporting diverse artists and fostering meaningful conversations within the music industry, ensuring its recognition process remains fair and reflective of Canada’s cultural landscape.
