Two others hospitalized after multi-vehicle crash involving commercial trucks

THUNDER BAY, ON – On September 18, 2024, around 1:19 p.m., Thunder Bay, Shabaqua, Armstrong, and Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachments, alongside the Municipality of Shuniah Fire & EMS, responded to a serious collision on Highway 11-17. The crash involved two commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) and two passenger cars between West Loon Road and East Loon Road in Shuniah.

A 67-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, while two other individuals were transported to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for medical evaluation.

The OPP North West Region’s Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team, along with Collision Reconstructionists and Forensic Identification Services, are leading the investigation, which is ongoing.

As of 1:40 a.m. on September 19, 2024, Highway 11-17 has been cleared and reopened.
