30-Day OPP Project Enhances Safety and Communication on Scott Street
FORT FRANCES, ON – A 30-day patrol initiative by the Fort Frances Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), dubbed “The Core,” has successfully concluded, bringing improved safety and stronger community ties to the downtown area. Launched on June 21, 2024, the project was designed to address rising concerns over nuisance offences in the 100-400 blocks of Scott Street.
Sergeant Matthew Bartlett, who led the operation, highlighted the increase in calls related to public intoxication, trespassing, and loitering. “The mission was to reduce crime and victimization while ensuring efficient resource deployment within the downtown core,” said Bartlett.
Despite a reported 61% increase in occurrences, Bartlett explained this was due to heightened police presence. “Success isn’t only measured in numbers but in the stronger collaboration between the community and our officers.”
During the 40 foot patrols, officers achieved notable results, including:
- 41 Liquor Licence and Control Act charges
- 5 executed warrants
- 3 Controlled Drugs and Substances Act charges
- 1 Highway Traffic Act charge
- 4 Criminal Code charges
- 5 LLCA warnings issued
The OPP extended its thanks to local businesses and residents for their cooperation and emphasized that their commitment to public safety remains ongoing. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity by calling 1-888-310-1122 or 911 for emergencies.
