Kasabonika Homicide – Man Charged in Murder of Six Year Old Girl

KASABONIKA FN – As first reported on NetNewsLedger on March 20, there was a serious incident in Kasabonika First Nation. The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are conducting an investigation into a death that occurred on March 20, 2019, in the Kasabonika Lake First Nation community.

The NAPS officers were called to a serious assault at a residence in the community.

It was reported that a six-year-old female had been seriously assaulted and had been transported to the medical centre by family and community members. As the officers responded the young victim was pronounced dead at the medical centre.

A post mortem examination is scheduled to take place on March 22, 2019, at the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) in Toronto.

On March 20, 2019, Lanny Edward MEKANAK, age 21, of Kasabonika Lake First Nation was arrested, he has been charged with Second Degree Murder.

The accused is currently in custody and will appear in Sioux Lookout Court on March 22, 2019.

Officers from NAPS and OPP North West Region Crime Units are continuing the investigation under the direction of Detective Inspector Randy Heida of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.
