Special Investigations Unit Looking into Death of Man in Thunder Bay

SIUTHUNDER BAY – NEWS – In the early morning hours of April 1st, Thunder Bay Police responded to a call involving a dispute at the Andras Court Apartment Building on Cumberland Street South.

Police arrived at the scene at about 07:35 am where shortly afterward the body of a man was found on the ground underneath the third-floor apartment building. The man was transported to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of that 62-year-old man this morning in Thunder Bay.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • In the morning hours of April 1, 2018, the Thunder Bay Police Service was notified of a dispute at an apartment building in the area of South Water Street and Cumberland Street South.
  • Officers arrived at the building at approximately 7:35 a.m.
  • A short time later, a man was found on the ground below a 3rd floor apartment unit.
  • The man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
At this time, two investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to this incident.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
