THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Lakehead University Thunderwolves men’s basketball team begin their non-conference schedule in the Thunderdome this weekend versus the Manitoba Bisons. Game times are Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm.

Lakehead will field a large group of newcomers, with 10 rookies on their expanded pre-season roster. Fourth year veterans Alex Robichaud, Mor Menashe and Bacarius Dinkins will be looked to for leadership as Lakehead turns the page to the 2015-16 season.

“These games this weekend will give us an opportunity to establish our team identity moving forward,” says Lakehead coach Manny Furtado.

The Manitoba Bisons got off to a 9-4 start last season in the Canada West conference before sliding to a 9-11 record to finish off the year. One familiar face expected to be on the Bisons’ roster is that of Joseph Nitychoruk, who has successfully transferred to Manitoba after playing three seasons in the Thunderwolves uniform.

Another transfer to the Bisons [via Brandon], Ilarion Bonhomme, will be a scoring threat, as the speedy 6’0″ guard is dangerous in transition and off the dribble. Fourth year AJ Basi led the Bisons last year with 16.3 points per game.

It is hoped that a healthy Henry Tan will help the cause for the Thunderwolves. The third year shooting guard from Vaughan, Ontario returns having put on some bulk, and is looking confident and fast in practice.

Referring to his group of youngsters, Coach Furtado adds, “Being a younger team, we need to ensure guys get some quality minutes to help prepare them for the regular season.”
