Deadly Mount Ontake Eruption in Japan
TOKYO – Japanese recovery teams continued to search for bodies on Mount Ontake for the past six days since the volcano erupted.

The death toll now stands at 47 – but could go up as officials confirm the status of 24 people still believed to be missing.

Some 1400 emergency workers have been deployed to the mountain and are combing through layers of thick ash and rocks that blanketed the summit.

Mount Ontake is a popular hiking destination and was crowded with climbers it erupted. The volcano’s last major eruption was in 1979.
