Third Party Manager for Attawapiskat Pulled – Community Control returned to Co-Manager

AttawapiskatATTAWAPISKAT – The community of Attawapiskat has been returned to co-management. The Third Party Manager who was put in place by the federal government last December after reports on the housing shortage broke in the media.

Today, the federal government, citing improved management conditions have pulled their manager, and returned the control of funding to the previous co-management situation.

The move comes after reports that students attending school off reserve did not receive their payments for tuition and expenses for April. Today, in the House of Commons, Minister John Duncan stated, “I’d like to inform the Member from Edmonton-Strathcona that the money is in the student account for post-secondary education as of today”.

Students who had not received their funds and tried to reach the third party manager were told that he was holidaying in Hawaii.

The decision on removing Attawapiskat from Third Party Management comes as the community was preparing to continue court action against the move.
