Thunder BayTHUNDER BAY – The Board of Directors of the Thunder Bay Marathon – Miles with the Giant are pleased to announce that the 3rd annual event on September 23 will feature a new 26.2 mile singe loop marathon course.

President Barry Streib says, “We’ve had great feedback on the course and the event as a whole, but we’ve always had a single loop 26.2 mile course as our goal since the inception of the event…so after over a year of work and planning with the City, we are pleased to introduce our new single loop 26.2 mile race course for the 2012 event. We are working closely with Athletics Canada to have our marathon course certified as a Boston qualifier.”

Individuals can register their participation in the marathon, half-marathon, marathon-relay (teams of 5), 10K or 5K races at www.thunderbaymarathon.com.

That is not the only good news. The formal announcement of $40,000 from Celebrate Ontario to support the Thunder Bay Marathon is now official.

“This investment is an important way to support these wonderful local events that bring so much life to our community. With the help of this funding, “Thunder Bay Marathon-Miles with the Giant” can continue to grow and draw visitors from outside the area, generating more local business and helping to create jobs in our city,” shared Michael Gravelle, MPP Thunder Bay-Superior North.

“It is my hope that this event continues to grow and prosper as it enters its third year. Having competed in the inaugural event and many similar events in other communities, I understand how valuable this type of activity can be to the broader community. I’m thrilled our government has provided $40,000 for this year’s event to help local volunteers put on another great show,” added Bill Mauro, MPP Thunder Bay-Atikokan.

The funding is how the single loop course came about. Barry Streib said, “The funding provided by Celebrate Ontario is integral to our expansion of the race course from 21 kms to 42 kms and will ensure that we are able to provide a single loop, Athletics Canada certified marathon event that will draw participants from across Canada and the Mid-West United States”.

Participants also have the option to raise pledges for their favourite charity through the Run for a Reason Charity Pledge Program by simply choosing a charity during the registration process.

The participating charities are: Camp Quality, Easter Seals Society, Epilepsy Ontario, Heart & Stroke Foundation, and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

Sponsors and volunteers are still needed to make the Thunder Bay Marathon – Miles with the Giant a huge success. Visit www.thunderbaymarathon.com for more information and to view the 2012 course map.
