SHUNIAH – At approximately 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 24, 2019, Shuniah Fire & Emergency Services (SFES) responded to a report of a vehicle fire in the 400 block of Lakeshore Drive, in the Municipality of Shuniah.

First arriving crews reported a fully involved vehicle fire in close proximity to a shed and the house. They also reported witnessing an explosion coming from the vehicle sending debris everywhere, including on the house.

Firefighters quickly knocked the fire down, preventing the spread of the fire to the nearby structures. Nearby structures were inspected with thermal imaging to ensure debris from the explosion posed no further risk.

About fourteen firefighters responded to the fire along with the Ontario Provincial Police. All SFES units were back in service at 6:45 pm.

Crews from one of our fire units reported challenging conditions responding to the fire due to vehicles not moving over to the right and stopping. SFES would like to remind the public that every second counts when emergency vehicles, such as police vehicles, fire apparatus, and ambulances are rushing to respond to calls for help – any delay can be critical for emergency responders and those who urgently need them
