PARIS – Paris has marked the 70th anniversary of the city’s liberation from the Nazi occupation. The anniversary was marked with celebrations at the town hall on Monday (August 25th 2014). Onlookers gathered in the pouring rain as a sound and light show was screened outside the city’s iconic Hotel de Ville.

Before a choir serenaded the crowd, French President Francois Hollande paid tribute to those of contributed to the liberation of Paris in 1944.

“Paris liberated was the victory of France, of all of France, that of the Free French forces, that of the London volunteers, that of the resistance, that of (General) Leclrec and (Jean de Lattre) de Tassigny, that of those of escaped the city, the overseas dissidents, this France with whom not only African soldiers joined forces, but also anti-nazi Germans and republican Spanish who were one of the first to penetrate Paris and to whom I pay tribute,” the President said in a speech.
