NHL – Flames lose late lead as Gauthier lifts Ducks to 5-3 win

Calgary carried a two-goal lead out of the first period, but Anaheim scored four unanswered and ended the Flames’ five-game home winning streak

CALGARY — NHL – Sports – The Calgary Flames let a 3-1 first-period lead slip away Friday as Cutter Gauthier scored with 1:34 remaining to give the Anaheim Ducks a 5-3 win at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Anaheim scored four unanswered goals and won its fourth straight game. Calgary fell to 7-9-1 and saw its five-game home winning streak come to an end. The result also interrupted a solid run in which the Flames had gone 7-3-1 over their previous 11 games.

A strong start disappears

William Stromgren opened the scoring 2:23 into the game, giving him two goals in three appearances since his recall from the Calgary Wranglers. Jeff Malott answered only 27 seconds later, but Joel Hanley and Joel Farabee then put Calgary ahead 3-1 before the first intermission.

Hanley, inserted after Kevin Bahl became a late scratch with a lower-body injury, scored in his first game since Oct. 3. Farabee added a power-play goal and has now scored in five straight home games. Zayne Parekh and Morgan Frost each finished with two assists.

The Ducks changed goaltenders after Lukas Dostal allowed three goals on 11 shots in the first period. Ville Husso stopped all 10 shots he faced over the final 40 minutes, while Anaheim pushed the pace and outshot Calgary 23-10 during that span.

Gauthier stays hot

Tristan Luneau cut the lead to one in the second period. Leo Carlsson tied the game on a power play 55 seconds into the third after Matt Coronato was called for delay of game.

Gauthier then converted Mikael Granlund’s pass with a one-timer from the right circle at 18:26. It was his 12th goal of the season and his 10th during a five-game goal streak. Nikita Nesterenko added an empty-net goal with 14 seconds left.

Anaheim has scored at least five goals in seven consecutive games, going 5-1-1 during that stretch. Its power play has also become a major weapon, converting 13 of 23 chances over the past five games after going 1-for-3 Friday.

What it means

Calgary did enough early to control the game, but its inability to sustain pressure after the first period left the door open. The Flames will try to respond Sunday at home against the Philadelphia Flyers. Anaheim returns home to face Pittsburgh the same day.
