New York scores twice in 89 seconds during the third period to earn its first win of the season when trailing after two
NEW YORK — NHL Sports – Tye Kartye scored the winning goal with 4:39 remaining as the New York Rangers struck twice in 89 seconds and rallied past the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.
Pavel Dorofeyev tied the game on the power play at 13:52 of the third period, snapping a shot from the right circle. At 15:21, Adam Fox sent a long transition pass to Kartye, who broke in alone and beat Joseph Woll over the glove.
The result gave New York its first win this season when trailing after two periods. The Rangers had been 0-6-0 in that situation. They improved to 9-7-1 overall and 8-2-0 at home, tied for the second-most wins through 10 home games in franchise history.
Kartye also helped create the opening goal. His forecheck forced a turnover before Marcus Pettersson’s point shot was redirected by J.T. Miller and then Gabe Perreault at 4:39 of the first period. Philadelphia answered with goals from Simon Benoit and Noel Acciari 1:59 apart in the second.
Fox finished with two assists, while Dylan Garand made 23 saves in his 12th consecutive appearance. Kartye’s winner was his fifth goal in 17 games, matching the total he scored in 24 games for New York last season after the Rangers claimed him off waivers from Seattle.
Philadelphia carried a 2-1 lead deep into the third but could not protect the middle of the ice on either late goal. The Flyers fell to 4-10-4, remain winless against Metropolitan Division opponents this season and have lost five of six.
For the Rangers, the comeback offered a useful sign of patience. They were not at their best for long stretches, but their power play delivered, their transition game produced the winner, and they closed the final minutes without giving the lead back.
