Dawson Mercer scores his first Winnipeg goal as the Jets win a second straight game after a nine-game slide
WINNIPEG — NHL Sports – The Winnipeg Jets followed the wildest win of their season with their most convincing one, scoring twice in 14 seconds early in the first period on the way to a 6-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night.
Dawson Mercer recorded his first goal as a Jet and added an assist. Mark Scheifele also had a goal and an assist, Kyle Connor and Dylan DeMelo each collected two assists, and Stuart Skinner stopped 24 shots.
Winnipeg had ended a nine-game losing streak Tuesday by scoring four times in the final 2:39 and beating Montreal 5-4 in overtime. Against Vancouver, the Jets showed that the comeback could be more than one remarkable night. They controlled the start and built a 3-1 lead before the first intermission.
Alex Iafallo opened the scoring with a power-play tip at 3:49. Cole Koepke made it 2-0 just 14 seconds later, and Mercer restored the two-goal lead at 14:04 after Liam Ohgren had answered for Vancouver. Mercer’s one-timer, set up from behind the net by Cole Perfetti, was also his first goal of the season.
Neal Pionk and Scheifele stretched the lead in the second period. Rookie Viggo Bjorck assisted on Scheifele’s goal for his first NHL point. At 18 years and 238 days, Bjorck became the youngest Jets player to record his first point since Ville Heinola in 2019.
Mario Ferraro added Winnipeg’s sixth goal before Brock Boeser completed the scoring for Vancouver. The Canucks fell to 3-14-1 and have lost four straight and 14 of their past 15. Their 22 giveaways, compared with three takeaways, underlined how often Winnipeg was able to regain possession and attack.
The Jets improved to 6-8-3. Two wins do not erase a difficult start, but the sequence matters: Winnipeg followed an emotional rescue in Montreal with a direct, disciplined home performance. The next test comes Sunday against Tampa Bay, when the Jets can show whether this surge has staying power.
