Montreal answers a painful collapse with a 5-4 comeback win, capped by Cole Caufield 30 seconds into overtime
The win mattered as much for the response as the two points. Montreal had allowed four goals in the final 2:39 of Tuesday’s 5-4 overtime loss to Winnipeg, the latest four-goal comeback in NHL history. Two nights later, the Canadiens fell behind 2-0, then 3-2 and 4-3, but answered each time.
Suzuki, who missed six games, scored at 15:25 of the first period and helped set up Kirby Dach’s power-play goal early in the third. He also earned an assist on Caufield’s winner, finishing his return with three points in 20:04 of ice time.
Adam Engstrom forced overtime with his first NHL goal at 14:54 of the third. The defenceman moved into the high slot and sent a wrist shot through traffic. Caufield then ended the game on a two-on-one, beating Sebastian Cossa high after selling a possible pass.
Logan Cooley supplied nearly all of Utah’s attack. He recorded his second hat trick in four games and added an assist on Nick Schmaltz’s third-period power-play goal. Utah went 3-for-5 with the man advantage, while Cossa made 30 saves.
Montreal improved to 10-3-3 and has won six of seven. Caufield also reached 15 career overtime goals in 384 games, the fastest any player has reached that mark in NHL history. Connor McDavid held the previous standard at 559 games.
The Canadiens did not erase every concern. They gave Utah five power plays and allowed several rush chances. Still, after Tuesday’s historic collapse, the ability to keep attacking through repeated deficits was the clearest sign that the group had reset. Montreal next travels to Toronto for a Saturday night meeting with the Maple Leafs.
