Greenstone OPP Traffic Blitz Leads to 206 Charges Over Two Days
GREENSTONE — Greenstone OPP laid 206 charges during a two-day traffic enforcement blitz across the Municipality of Greenstone, with officers focusing on speeding and seatbelt compliance on April 16 and 17, 2026.
Police Report 168 Traffic Stops During Enforcement Initiative
The Greenstone Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police says officers conducted 168 traffic stops during the initiative.
Police laid 204 provincial offences charges and two Criminal Code charges. Officers also issued 97 warnings for various offences.
Two prohibited drivers were stopped during the blitz, resulting in 45-day vehicle impoundments.
Speeding And Seatbelt Violations Targeted
OPP say many of the charges were connected to speeding and seatbelt violations.
Police say both remain leading contributing factors in serious and fatal collisions on Ontario roads.
The OPP says the enforcement campaign was part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety through proactive policing and public education.
Criminal Code Context
The OPP release did not identify the drivers or specify the exact Criminal Code sections connected to the two criminal charges.
For context, operation while prohibited is addressed under section 320.18(1) of the Criminal Code. The section applies when a person operates a conveyance while prohibited by a court order under the Criminal Code, or by another legal restriction imposed under federal or provincial law in connection with a Criminal Code conviction or discharge. The Criminal Code also includes an exception for people properly registered in and complying with an approved ignition interlock program.
Punishment for operation while prohibited under section 320.18(1) is set out in section 320.19(5). The offence can proceed by indictment, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, or by summary conviction. Actual sentences depend on the facts of the case, prior record, aggravating and mitigating factors, and the Crown’s election.
Ontario also provides for 45-day vehicle impoundments in Criminal Code suspension cases.
All charges before the courts are allegations. Any accused person is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Regional Road Safety Impact
Traffic enforcement in Greenstone has broader regional importance because the area serves as a key travel corridor for residents, commercial drivers, resource-sector workers and visitors moving through Northwestern Ontario.
Highway travel in the region often involves long distances, changing weather, wildlife hazards and heavy transport traffic. Speeding and failing to wear a seatbelt can sharply increase the risk of serious injury when collisions occur on rural and northern roads.
OPP Urge Drivers To Slow Down And Buckle Up
Police are reminding motorists to slow down, wear seatbelts and remain attentive behind the wheel.
Greenstone OPP say targeted enforcement will continue across the region to address high-risk driving behaviours.
