Thunder Bay Fire Rescue knocks down early-morning house fire in Grandview
Thunder Bay – NEWS – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire on Woodside Street in the city’s Grandview area just after midnight Wednesday. The fire drew a major response, but all occupants had already made it out of the home before crews arrived, an important factor in preventing a more serious outcome.
Heavy smoke found on arrival at single-storey bungalow
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue says crews were dispatched at 12:38 a.m. on March 25, 2026, to a reported structural fire on Woodside Street.
When the first crew arrived, firefighters found heavy smoke surrounding a single-storey bungalow. Fire conditions were initially described as aggressive, prompting crews to begin an exterior attack.
Firefighters used two attack lines and applied a large volume of water, which Thunder Bay Fire Rescue says was highly effective. Searches of both the main floor and the basement were completed quickly afterward.
Ambulance crew first raised the alarm
According to Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, an ambulance crew attending a medical call first alerted dispatch to the fire.
When paramedics arrived, they smelled smoke and were told by an occupant leaving the home that something was on fire.
That early notification likely helped speed the response and get fire crews on scene quickly.
Large emergency response sent to Woodside Street
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue says six pumpers, one aerial ladder and one command vehicle responded to the incident.
No further details were immediately released on injuries, the extent of damage or the cause of the fire.
Fire department reminds residents to check smoke alarms and escape plans
Following the call, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminded residents that working smoke alarms and a regularly practised home fire escape plan are essential to keeping families safe.
The reminder is especially timely in Thunder Bay, where fast evacuation can make a critical difference during overnight fires, when residents may have only moments to react.
