Streamlined 4–5 day training option aims to help Northern Ontario mines meet legislated supervisor requirements faster
(Feb. 3, 2026 | Sudbury) — Workplace Safety North (WSN) says it will roll out a new Accelerated Mining Supervisor Common Core training pathway this spring, giving Ontario mining operations a faster way to complete mandatory supervisor training while still meeting the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development(MLITSD) modular standards.
The Accelerated pathway is designed as a streamlined delivery model. WSN’s current accelerated offerings show 4-daytraining for the Generic First Line Supervisor Common Core (Program #770141) and 5-day delivery for the Underground Hard Rock First Line Supervisor program (Program #770121), with May 2026 sessions already posted in its training schedule.
“We’re excited to introduce the Accelerated pathway, which gives mining operations the option to have supervisors trained in less time,” said Cindy Schiewek, WSN Executive Director of Health and Safety Services. “It responds directly to industry demand for more flexible training options, while maintaining the same high standards for quality and learner outcomes.”
What’s changing
WSN says the accelerated approach keeps the focus on required modules and practical instruction, compressing delivery into a tighter window for employers trying to minimize time away from operations while meeting compliance expectations.
For supervisors, WSN notes that full accreditation typically includes a return-to-workplace component to demonstrate skills and understanding to a qualified trainer.
The “Classic” pathway remains
WSN will continue offering its Classic Mining Supervisor Common Core training as an in-depth option, including the ability to take individual modules as needed—useful for supervisors or companies wanting added development in specific areas.
WSN also points to added supports such as coaching/consulting services that help translate classroom learning into on-the-job performance.
Northern Ontario access — including Thunder Bay
WSN says training will be offered regularly across Northern Ontario and that employers can also arrange delivery at their own sites.
WSN’s online training calendar already lists Northern Ontario sessions in multiple communities, including Thunder Bay locations for some courses—part of the organization’s broader regional training footprint.
Refresher training and an extra perk
WSN says it will offer free online refresher training (running through March 31, 2027) for supervisors who have previously completed a WSN Common Core program, aimed at keeping supervisors current on legislative and workplace safety changes.
Separately, WSN also offers a Mining First Line Supervisor Refresher course for supervisors who have completed Common Core programs, covering updates on legislation, hazards, and key safety strategies.
To recognize completion, WSN says participants who finish any WSN Mining Supervisor Common Core program will receive a free miner’s lunchbox.
