THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR) crews responded to multiple structural fire incidents across the city on Monday, January 26.

The first call came in from a residence on North Vickers Street, followed shortly by a second incident on Dease Street. TBFR reports both fires were minor and were quickly brought under control by responding crews.

Later in the day, firefighters were dispatched to a third incident on Banning Street on the city’s north side.

That fire was determined to have been caused by improperly discarded smoking materials and was extinguished quickly by the first arriving unit.

The fourth and most significant incident occurred at a Donald Street East address.

When crews arrived, they reported smoke showing from a main-floor apartment and initiated a second alarm response. Firefighters entered the building promptly after a bystander advised that an occupant may have been inside the affected unit.

Crews conducted a search of the apartment and applied water to visible fire. The blaze was brought under control, and subsequent searches confirmed no occupants were inside the unit.

TBFR says all other residents had safely evacuatedprior to the arrival of fire crews.

In total, six pumpers, one ladder truck, and one command vehicle responded to the Donald Street East call. Smoke and water damage were contained to the single apartment.

No injuries or fatalities were reported. The cause of the Donald Street East fire remains under investigation.
