THUNDER BAY – CRIME NEWS: A Thunder Bay man is now facing a charge of First-Degree Murder following the death of 85-year-old Hendrick Walinga, who succumbed to injuries sustained during an October 2025 assault in the city’s north end.
Initial Incident and Response
On October 11, 2025, Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) officers responded to a report of an assault in the area of Red River Road and Clarkson Avenue.
Upon arrival, they located Mr. Walinga suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, where he remained in critical condition.
Three days later, on October 14, 2025, Drew Mitchell was arrested and initially charged with Attempt to Commit Murder as a result of the police investigation.
Victim Succumbs to Injuries
Despite extensive medical intervention, Mr. Walinga passed away from his injuries, prompting a re-evaluation of the charges by investigators and the Crown Attorney’s Office.
On January 19, 2026, TBPS formally upgraded the charge against Drew Mitchell to First-Degree Murder.
Understanding First-Degree Murder in Canada
Under the Criminal Code of Canada, First-Degree Murder (Section 231) is defined as a planned and deliberate killing, or a death that occurs during the commission of certain serious offences, such as sexual assault, kidnapping, or forcible confinement.
A conviction carries a mandatory life sentence with no eligibility for parole for 25 years.
In this case, while police have not disclosed whether the charge is based on planning or another statutory circumstance, the upgrade suggests prosecutors believe there is sufficient evidence of premeditation or aggravating factors.
Next Steps in Legal Proceedings
Mitchell remains in custody pending further court appearances. The timeline for preliminary hearings or trial has not yet been released. The investigation remains ongoing, and TBPS is urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
This tragic incident has sent ripples through the community, especially among seniors in the area, raising broader questions around public safety and support for vulnerable residents in Thunder Bay.
