THUNDER BAY – NEWS – On Wednesday afternoon, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR) put out a second travel trailer fire in less than a week.

This shows how important it is to be more aware of fire safety in the winter.

Firefighters were called to a travel trailer fire on Kingston Street around 12:30 p.m. on December 3.

This is the second fire in three days that has to do with a trailer.

Four Pumpers and a Command Unit were the first to respond. When the first crew got there, they saw a lot of smoke, which led to a second alarm being sent out.

This caused the use of two more Pumpers and an Aerial Ladder.

Thanks to the quick work of the first crews on the scene, the fire was put out quickly, and the second alarm units were called off. Luckily, no civilians or firefighters were hurt.

After looking into the situation on the spot, Thunder Bay Fire Inspectors found that the fire started in a wood-burning appliance inside the travel trailer.

TBFR Fire Safety Reminder

Because of what happened recently, TBFR is once again telling people to be very careful when using any extra heat sources, especially in small spaces like travel trailers.

The department stressed that “woodburning appliances, space heaters, and other portable heat sources must always be kept a safe distance from any combustible materials.”

As the weather gets colder, TBFR stresses how important it is to properly install, maintain, and keep an eye on all heating equipment.
