THUNDER BAY – NEWS – With 5 to 10 cm of snow expected overnight, the City of Thunder Bay is activating winter priority route restrictions and calendar parking to help snowplows clear streets safely and efficiently.
Both measures will come into effect on Wednesday, November 26 at 9:00 am, and parking officers will be enforcing the rules. The restrictions will remain in place until spring 2026.
What the Restrictions Mean for Drivers
During the winter months, these parking rules are put in place so plows can properly clear snow from local roads:
-
Calendar Parking
-
In effect daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
-
Ensures one side of the street is free of parked vehicles, allowing plows to clear one side of the road each day.
-
-
Priority Route Restrictions
-
In effect from 2:00 am to 7:00 am.
-
No parking on either side of designated priority routes during these hours so snowplows can work without obstruction.
-
Some streets may have additional posted restrictions, which override the general rules. Residents are asked to check and follow all signs in their neighbourhood.
Safety Around Snowplows
When plows are operating, motorists are urged to drive with extra caution:
-
Stay at least 20 metres behind a plow.
-
Do not attempt to pass unless absolutely necessary and safe.
-
Give operators enough space to manoeuvre, especially at intersections and along narrower streets.
