Early-morning response leads to safe outcome
THUNDER BAY — In the early hours of October 5, Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) Primary Response Unit officers responded to a call to help locate a person believed to be at risk of self-harm.
After officers found personal belongings the individual had left behind, a police drone was deployed at approximately 2:30 a.m. to widen the search area.
The K-9 Unit was also activated, and Police Service Dog (PSD) Lucek) began a track shortly after arriving on scene.
K-9 track succeeds despite difficult conditions
Working in rain and with no known direction of travel, PSD Lucek successfully located the individual.
Officers then ensured the person received immediate medical assistance.
TBPS notes that PSD Lucek is trained to find people in a range of situations—including those who are lost, in medical distress, or otherwise in urgent need of help.
Specialized units bolster community safety
TBPS emphasizes that specialized teams—such as the K-9 Unit and UAS (drone) operators—play a vital role in supporting front-line officers and enhancing community safety. This incident underscores the value of quickly identifying the risk, deploying the right resources, and coordinating an effective response.
