A sharp northwest wind follows Sunday precipitation, while Attawapiskat faces a brief freezing-rain risk before a milder Monday and colder Tuesday

NORTHERN ONTARIO — Issued Sunday, Nov. 8, 2026

Thunder Bay – WEATHER DESK – A band of rain, light snow and flurries is crossing remote Northern Ontario on Sunday, followed by gusty northwest winds and temperatures near freezing. The main travel concerns are reduced visibility in mixed precipitation, slick untreated surfaces and a short risk of freezing rain at Attawapiskat.

Environment and Climate Change Canada listed no active public weather alerts for the covered communities at the 6:11 a.m. EST check. Forecast conditions can still affect air travel, winter roads, docks and local road surfaces, particularly where rain changes to snow.

Sunday  Rain changes to snow in the north

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug at Big Trout Lake and Kasabonika Lake First Nation can expect periods of rain changing to light snow near noon, ending during the afternoon. The temperature holds near 1 C as northwest winds reach 20 km/h with gusts to 40. Both settle near -3 C Sunday night under cloud, with a 30 per cent chance of flurries.

Bearskin Lake First Nation is colder. Periods of light snow end near noon, then cloud remains. Northwest winds of 30 km/h gusting to 50 ease near noon, the temperature holds near -1 C and the wind chill stays near -8. The night falls to about -3 C.

Sandy Lake sees a 30 per cent chance of rain showers or flurries in the morning, with northwest winds of 30 km/h gusting to 50 easing during the morning. The temperature stays near 1 C before a cloudy night near -1 C.

Pikangikum First Nation has a similar wind shift, but Sunday is slightly milder near 2 C with a 30 per cent chance of morning showers; Sunday night is cloudy near -1 C.

Ogoki Post and Marten Falls First Nation receive periods of rain with a high near 4 C and a northwest wind developing in the afternoon.

Neskantaga First Nation will see periods of rain or light snow and a high near 3 C, followed by a low near -2 C.

Attawapiskat First Nation turns cloudy as periods of rain mixed with light snow begin in the morning. Environment Canada identifies a risk of freezing rain late in the morning. The high is 3 C after a morning wind chill near -6, and Sunday night is cloudy near -1 C.

Monday  Cloud lingers as temperatures rebound

Sandy Lake and Pikangikum are the mild spots, reaching 6 C under cloud with a 30 per cent chance of rain showers or flurries. Big Trout Lake, Kasabonika Lake and Bearskin Lake reach about 2 C with the same 30 per cent mixed-precipitation chance. Ogoki Post, Marten Falls and the Neskantaga substitute forecast reach about 4 C.

Attawapiskat stays cloudy with a high near 2 C.

Monday-night lows range from about -1 C at Attawapiskat to -4 C around Sandy Lake, Big Trout Lake and Bearskin Lake. Patchy flurries remain possible, so wet surfaces may refreeze after dark.

Tuesday  Cooler air returns

Sandy Lake and Pikangikum turn cloudy with highs near -1 C. Big Trout Lake, Kasabonika Lake and Bearskin Lake stay cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of flurries and highs near -3 C. Ogoki Post, Marten Falls and Neskantaga are milder near 2 C with a 30 per cent chance of flurries or rain showers, while Attawapiskat reaches 2 C with the same mixed-precipitation chance.

Wardrobe guidance

Use a waterproof outer layer over an insulating mid-layer, with a warm hat and water-resistant gloves. Boots should have good tread and enough room for dry socks. Travellers around Attawapiskat should treat untreated walking and driving surfaces as potentially icy during the freezing-rain risk.

Weather trivia

A rain-to-snow change does not require the ground temperature to be below zero. Snow can reach the surface when the air column is cold enough, even while the reported surface temperature sits slightly above freezing.
