Apple Releases iOS 27 with Siri AI, Stronger Parental Controls and Major Performance Updates

Apple’s latest operating systems bring a more conversational Siri, new family-safety tools and promised speed improvements—but many AI features require newer hardware, and some cloud-based tools face daily limits

Siri AI is initially available as an English-language beta. Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support will begin arriving in October.

Canadian users with supported hardware and their device language set to English can begin accessing Siri AI. French-language support is expected in October, although Apple cautions that feature availability can vary by language and region.

Not every feature shown in Apple’s demonstrations is available in Canada. For example, using Siri and the iPhone camera to split a bill and pay friends through Apple Cash is limited to eligible users in the United States.

In Photos, Spatial Reframing can adjust the composition of an image, while Extend can generate material beyond the original edges of a photograph. Apple has also updated its Clean Up tool for removing unwanted objects.

Image Playground can produce images in a wider range of styles, including photorealistic images. Apple says generated or AI-edited images will include identifying metadata. Support for Google DeepMind’s SynthID standard is expected in a later update.

Apple has redesigned its child-account setup and Screen Time system.

Parents can choose which apps a child may use when a device is first configured and add more apps as the child gets older. A feature called Ask to Browse lets parents require approval before a child visits a new website in Safari.

Parents can also approve new contacts. Communication Safety, which already detects certain sensitive content, has been expanded to identify and intervene when graphic violence or gore is detected in shared images or videos.

• New photographs may appear in Photos up to 70 per cent faster;
• AirDrop transfers may be up to 80 per cent faster; and
• Some file operations involving an iPad and a USB 4 external drive may be up to five times faster.

Those are Apple’s test results, not guaranteed improvements for every user. Actual performance will depend on the device, available storage, battery health, network conditions, file type and how the device is used.

Apple has also improved transitions between cellular and Wi-Fi networks. Messages can continue sending texts while a large photo or video is being delivered over a slow connection, which could be useful in rural and remote areas where bandwidth is limited.

One of the most important details in Apple’s announcement appears in the availability notes.

Apple says features that rely on server-side models may have daily usage limits. This includes Siri AI, Image Playground, advanced photo editing and cloud-based Apple Foundation Models used by Shortcuts.

The company says limits can vary according to the feature, complexity of the request, demand on Apple’s systems and other factors. Apple also states that expanded access will be available for a fee in the future.
