Thunder Bay Man Dies In Single-Vehicle Collision On Highway 11-17 In Shuniah

SHUNIAH — A 46-year-old Thunder Bay man has died following a single-vehicle collision on Highway 11-17 near Spruce River Road, east of Thunder Bay.

OPP Say Pickup Truck Was Involved In Early-Morning Crash

Ontario Provincial Police say members of the Thunder Bay Detachment, along with emergency crews, responded at approximately 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2026, after reports of a collision involving a pickup truck in Shuniah.

The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was later pronounced deceased.
Police have not released the man’s name.

Highway Reopened After Investigation

Multiple lanes of Highway 11-17 were closed between Spruce River Road and Terry Fox Lookout Road while OPP officers, including Technical Collision Investigation and

Reconstruction team members, examined the scene.

All lanes have since reopened.

Highway 11-17 is a key route connecting Thunder Bay with communities east of the city and the broader Trans-Canada Highway network across Northwestern Ontario.
