FedNor funding announced at PDAC will help equip a new microanalytical lab in Thunder Bay
March 3, 2026 — Toronto/Thunder Bay — NetNewsLedger – The federal government is investing $440,948 through FedNor to strengthen mining research capacity in Northern Ontario, supporting new work aimed at improving how gold deposits—and future mineral opportunities—are discovered and evaluated.
The funding was announced Monday at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) 2026 convention by Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor, and Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay—Superior North.
New lab equipment to support next-generation gold research
The investment will help Lakehead University equip a new mining research laboratory at its Thunder Bay campus, including upgrades that will support a new industry research chair focused on developing new model systems for gold deposits.
FedNor’s contribution will enable the university to acquire and install three major instruments that will form the core of a new microanalytical facility, along with minor electrical panel upgrades to an existing lab space.
Benefits for Northwestern Ontario exploration and training
The project is designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of mineral discovery—work that can help keep Northern Ontario competitive in exploration and development as global demand grows for responsibly sourced minerals.
Because Lakehead will retain the equipment after the project wraps up, the facility is expected to become a long-term regional resource for university researchers and local mining and exploration companies. It will also support graduate-level training in advanced analytical skills used by industry geologists—roles that remain a key economic opportunity across Northwestern Ontario.
What they’re saying
“When we invest in natural resource development we invest in Northern Ontario’s economy, and Canada’s future… This project will define the future of mining research… and ensure our regions stay competitive for generations to come.”
— The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor
“Mining is foundational to the economy of northwestern Ontario… This strategic investment in Lakehead’s unmatched expertise doesn’t just support discovery, it strengthens Canada’s position as a world leader in responsible mining innovation.”
