Ongoing Investigation by Major Crimes Unit
BRUNSWICK HOUSE FIRST NATION – The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate a shooting incident that occurred in the community on Sunday afternoon, October 12, 2025.
Officers were dispatched to a residential address in response to a disturbance call. Upon arrival, they discovered a male victim suffering from gunshot-related injuries. While the extent of the injuries has not been disclosed, they are not believed to be life-threatening.
Suspect at Large – Public Urged to Shelter in Place
Authorities are searching for a male suspect believed to be involved in the shooting. NAPS, assisted by its Emergency Response Team and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), has deployed significant resources to locate the individual.
Residents in Brunswick House First Nation and surrounding areas, including Chapleau, are being asked to shelter in place and follow these safety precautions:

Avoid engaging with unknown individuals or the suspect.

Call 911 if you spot any suspicious activity.

Keep curtains or blinds closed.

Lock vehicle doors while travelling and avoid picking up hitchhikers.

Charges Pending – Possible Legal Outcomes
Although charges have yet to be formally laid, the suspect is expected to face serious criminal charges, including:

Attempted Murder (Section 239, Criminal Code of Canada) – carries a potential maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Discharge of a Firearm with Intent (Section 244) – punishable by up to 14 years imprisonment.

Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose (Section 88) – with a penalty of up to 10 years.

Additional charges could include aggravated assault and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
Upon arrest and conviction, sentencing would depend on factors such as intent, criminal history, and whether the offence involved a prohibited or restricted firearm.

Motorists and travellers in the region are advised to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel in and around Brunswick House First Nation until further notice. Police emphasize that these measures are in place to protect public safety as the search continues.
