Wildfire Update – Northeast Region Sees New Fire Near Wawa

NORTHEAST REGION – AERIAL AND GROUND CREWS ENGAGED

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) is actively responding to a new wildfire in the Northeast Fire Region, with aerial and ground resources deployed near Wawa.


New Wildfire Confirmed – Wawa 2 (WAW002)

On Monday, June 2, one new wildland fire was confirmed:

  • Wawa 2 (WAW002)

    • Size: 6 hectares

    • Location: Approximately 500 metres west of Highway 17, and about 7 km northeast of Pokei Lake

    • Status: Not under control

Active Fire Suppression Efforts Underway:

  • Two FireRanger crews are currently engaged in direct ground suppression.

  • Aerial support has included two CL-415 waterbombers and a lead birddog aircraft, which have been conducting water drops to limit fire spread and support containment.


Current Fire Activity in the Northeast Region

As of this update, there are three active wildland fires in the Northeast:

  • 1 fire is under control

  • 1 fire is not under control

  • 1 fire is currently being observed


Fire Hazard Conditions

The fire hazard in the Northeast remains elevated:

  • Primarily High across most of the region

  • Low to Moderate conditions are present from North Bay southward to the region’s boundary

🚫 NO DRONE ZONE – Wildfire Safety First

AFFES reminds the public that flying drones near wildland fires is illegal and dangerous. Drones can interfere with aircraft involved in fire suppression, putting lives at risk. Stay grounded and stay safe.


🔥 Outdoor Burning Regulations Reminder

With elevated fire risk, residents are urged to exercise extreme caution with any outdoor burning. AFFES encourages the use of composting or municipal yard waste services over burning.

If burning is necessary:

  • Fires must be lit no sooner than two hours before sunset

  • Fires must be fully extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise

  • Always have adequate water and tools nearby to control the fire
