Evacuation strongly recommended for Malachi Lake, Otter Lake, and surrounding areas as fire activity increases

THUNDER BAY – **Wildfire Update – Residents, cottagers, and visitors in the path of the growing KEN020 wildfire in Northwestern Ontario are being urged to evacuate immediately as the fire’s behaviour intensifies and conditions become more dangerous.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) has issued an evacuation alert for several lakes and nearby areas, including:

  • Malachi Lake

  • Otter Lake

  • Mantario Lake

  • Hello Lake

  • Jadel Lake

  • Musk Lake

  • Southern areas of Tetu Lake, including Scot Bay

With the fire rapidly evolving, access to these areas will soon become restricted, and residents are being advised to prepare now, gather essential items, and leave while safe access remains possible.

Road Closures in Effect

Under authority of Subsection 52(1) of the Public Lands Act, the following roads have been closed to public travel unless a travel permit is obtained:

  • Gundy Road north of Tannis Lake

  • Pickerel Lake Road at KM 9 near Pelican Pouch Launch

  • Cygnet Lake Road at Highway 525

Travel permits can be requested by contacting the Kenora District Office of the Ministry of Natural Resources at 807-456-2370.

The situation is developing quickly. Residents and visitors in the area are reminded to:

Stay updated on the latest wildfire conditions at ontario.ca/fireupdates
Prepare an emergency kit with essentials, medications, and important documents
Have an evacuation plan ready and act early—don’t wait for mandatory orders
Respect all road closures, evacuation orders, and directions from emergency personnel
Keep clear of firefighting crews and aircraft—give them the space they need to work safely
