THUNDER BAY – On Tuesday, May 13, the third annual INSPIRE – Sport & Health for Life event will welcome Grade 8 girls from across Thunder Bay to the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse and Hangar at Lakehead University, in an initiative designed to encourage lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

Presented by Tbaytel, the event is a response to concerning trends showing that one in three girls drop out of sports by age 16, compared to one in ten boys. Compounding the issue, many girls did not return to organized sports after the pandemic.

“We want to reverse these trends by providing girls with opportunities to explore, connect, and be inspired,” says Trisha Heino, Sport Development Coordinator. “INSPIRE is about showing girls the doors that sport and activity can open for them — both now and into adulthood.”

Interactive, Fun, and Inspirational

INSPIRE connects students with local sports organizations, coaches, and activity providers in a fun, interactive format. Participants will enjoy demonstrations, hands-on activities, and conversations with female leaders and athletes who serve as positive role models.

Adding to the inspiration, local athlete Victoria Posselwhite will deliver a motivational keynote address, sharing her journey in sport and encouraging girls to embrace active living.

INSPIRE also showcases the wide range of high school sports opportunities available to them as they prepare for Grade 9 this fall.

Local Collaboration, Local Impact

The event is made possible thanks to collaboration between numerous local organizations including:

  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit

  • Lakehead University

  • Superior Secondary Schools Athletic Association

  • Giant Gymnastics

  • City of Thunder Bay

Tbaytel is proudly serving as Presenting Sponsor, with Subway supporting as the Luncheon Sponsor.

“We’re thrilled to be part of this incredible event,” said Agnes Notarbartolo, Tbaytel’s Manager of Communication and Brand. “INSPIRE provides young women in our community with a valuable chance to try new activities, stay active, and build lifelong healthy habits. It also helps strengthen connections between girls and the many local groups ready to support them.”
