Today’s Forecast for Big Trout Lake

Good morning, Big Trout Lake! As of this morning, winter is still hanging on with frosty fingertips. Temperatures are sitting well below freezing, although the latest Environment Canada update specifically for Big Trout Lake isn’t posted individually — conditions are consistent with the broader Northern Ontario trend today: cold, breezy, and wintry to start.

Currently, it’s mainly cloudy with some early morning snow showers and gusty north winds expected. Winds will clock in around 20 km/h, gusting up to 40 km/h early before settling down later in the day. The high for today will be around -2°C, but factor in the wind chill and it will feel closer to -10°C this morning before easing slightly this afternoon. The UV index will stay low at around 3 (moderate) — but still high enough that, if you’re out on the snow, it’s worth tossing on a bit of sunscreen.

Tonight and Tomorrow: Clear and Bright… but Still Chilly!

Tonight, skies will clear beautifully, and the winds will calm down to around 15 km/h. However, the temperature will tumble to a very chilly -12°C, with an overnight wind chill making it feel closer to -18°C — a true Northern Ontario spring night!

Wednesday, April 30th, looks much brighter. Expect mainly sunny skies and a sharp turnaround in daytime temperatures, climbing to a high of around 4°C. Winds will shift slightly from the south but remain light, helping ease the bitter edge. The UV index will rise to 5, considered moderate — so don’t forget your sunglasses, especially with all that bright sunshine bouncing off the lingering snow.

Wednesday night will bring some cloudy periods but should stay dry, with temperatures dipping again to around -6°C.

Looking Ahead: Slow but Steady Warm-Up

Thursday, May 1st, will bring a mix of cloud and sun with temperatures creeping up to 5°C — still cool for May, but every little bit helps! There’s a slight chance of some flurries or rain showers Thursday night as temperatures hover just below freezing. Friday looks similar, with a high of about 6°C under partly cloudy skies.

Historic Highs and Lows for April 29

Big Trout Lake’s historical weather swings this time of year are impressive. The record high for April 29th is around 18°C, while record lows have dipped into the frigid -20°C territory — so while today’s chill feels rough, it’s actually relatively mild compared to the worst Big Trout Lake has seen!

What to Wear?

Today demands your full winter wardrobe encore! Heavy coats, gloves, scarves, and winter boots are a must. Layer smartly so you can adjust slightly if you venture out during sunnier, slightly warmer spells. Tomorrow’s sunnier skies mean lighter layers by the afternoon, but mornings will still feel like winter, so don’t be fooled by the sunshine!
