Today’s Outlook: Bring Your Boots and Maybe a Canoe!

SUDBURY – It’s a soggy Saturday for Greater Sudbury as a Rainfall Warning remains in effect, making today’s fashion motto: “waterproof or bust!” As of 7:00 AM at Greater Sudbury Airport, it’s a brisk 0.8°C with a light rain and snow mix falling from the sky — nature’s very own slushy. The barometric pressure sits at 101.6 kPa and is falling, hinting that this unsettled mess will continue a bit longer. Humidity is absolutely through the roof at 98%, so yes, you’ll feel like you’re walking through a cloud.

Winds are blowing from the north at 22 km/h, gusting up to 33 km/h, and will pick up steam through the morning, reaching north winds of 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h. Visibility is currently a decent 16 km — not bad for a day when rain and wet snow are tag-teaming the city.

Expect periods of rain or wet snow to continue through the day, with another 5 to 15 mm of rain possible, especially east of Sudbury. All of this rainfall, on top of melting snow, means localized flooding could become a real headache, particularly around low-lying areas, rivers, creeks, and culverts. Drive carefully and maybe keep a paddle handy, just in case.

Today’s high will struggle up to 8°C. Historic records for April 26 show Sudbury’s warmest on record was a delightful 27.0°C (in 1990) while the chilliest plunge was a freezing -9.2°C (way back in 1972). So, today’s temps are somewhere between “barely spring” and “where’s my parka?”

Tonight, the rain will finally take a bow, and clear skies will roll in. Winds will calm down, becoming light this evening after gusting to 40 km/h. Overnight lows will dip to a crisp +1°C.

Sunday: A Sun-Sational Turnaround

Sunday is shaping up to be the reward for surviving today’s soggy shenanigans. Expect a full-on sunny day, perfect for drying out your soaked boots. The high will soar to a beautiful 16°C with a UV index of 6 — a “high” warning for those planning to spend their day basking like turtles on rocks. Sunday night will bring just some cloudy periods and a mild low of +5°C.

Monday: A Bit of Everything

Monday offers a pleasant mix of sun and cloud with temperatures reaching a comfortable 14°C. By nightfall, however, clouds will thicken up and bring a 70% chance of rain showers, with overnight lows hovering around 9°C. Keep that umbrella handy — it might just come back into fashion.

What to Wear?

Today’s best look? Think full waterproof armor — rain boots, raincoat, and maybe even a lifejacket if you’re feeling cheeky. Don’t forget layers underneath; it’s chilly out there! By Sunday, you’ll be back in lighter jackets and sunglasses, basking in true springtime glory.

Sudbury Weather Trivia:

Did you know? Sudbury holds the record for one of Ontario’s largest meteorite impacts, the Sudbury Basin! While today’s rain might feel like the sky is falling, thankfully it’s just water and not a cosmic rock.
