City crews begin annual cleanup to clear winter sand, improve safety, and protect local waterways
THUNDER BAY – CITY NEWS – With warmer weather finally settling in, Thunder Bay’s annual spring street sweeping program kicks off on Monday, April 28, as city crews hit the roads to clean up the sand and debris left behind by winter operations.
Downtown and Major Roads First
The first areas to be swept include downtown cores, arterial and collector streets, and bike lanes. Once those are completed, crews will move into residential neighbourhoods across the city.
“You’ll see our crews working across the city over the next several weeks,” said Ian Spoljarich, Manager of Roads. “Street sweeping keeps streets safe and clean by clearing lanes, improving visibility, reducing vehicle damage, and protecting our stormwater systems and local waterways.”
Safety First: Watch for Crews
Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to exercise extra caution near street sweeping equipment and to give crews the space they need to work safely.
