Friday: Snow Squalls and Gusty Winds Make for Hazardous Travel

A winter travel advisory is in effect for Sault Ste. Marie, with snow squalls and gusty winds. Cold temps continue into the weekend, but a warm-up is coming!

Good morning, Sault Ste. Marie! If you’re heading out today, extra caution is advised as a Winter Weather Travel Advisory is in effect for the region, including St. Joseph Island. Expect bursts of heavy snow and blowing snow, which will significantly reduce visibility at times.

Additional snowfall amounts of up to 5 cm are possible, with strong northwesterly wind gusts reaching 60 km/h.

At 7:00 AM, the temperature at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport was -5.4°C, with a wind chill making it feel like -11°C. The pressure is at 100.9 kPa and rising, while humidity sits at 77%. Visibility remains at a decent 24 km, but conditions can change quickly due to the snow squalls.

Flurries will taper off around noon, but cloudy skies will linger with a 40% chance of additional flurries throughout the day. Local blowing snow will ease as the morning progresses. The high today will be -4°C, but the wind chill will make it feel like -18°C in the morning and -10°C by the afternoon. The UV index is at a low 2.

Friday Night: Frigid Temperatures Set In

As the snow tapers off, partly cloudy skies will take over tonight. The northwest wind will continue at 30 km/h, and temperatures will plummet to -13°C. With the wind chill, it’ll feel like -16°C this evening and a bitter -23°C overnight. If you’re heading out, be sure to layer up!

Saturday: Some Sun, but Still Cold

Saturday brings a mix of sun and cloud, with the northwest wind easing early in the morning. The high will reach -2°C, but the morning wind chill will be a frosty -23°C before warming slightly to -7°C in the afternoon. If you’re planning to be outside early, bundle up—it’s going to be a cold start. Saturday night will see increasing clouds with a 30% chance of flurries and a low of -7°C.

Sunday and Monday: A Gradual Warm-Up

Sunday will be cloudy with a 60% chance of flurries, but temperatures will rise above freezing, with a high of +2°C. Sunday night will bring cloudy periods and a 40% chance of flurries, with a low of -4°C.

Monday is looking even milder, with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 6°C—almost spring-like! The night will be cloudy, with a low of -5°C.

Travel Advisory: Stay Safe on the Roads

With snow squalls and strong winds reducing visibility today, travel conditions can change rapidly. If you must drive, be prepared for areas of poor visibility and snow-covered roads. Give yourself extra time, slow down, and drive with caution.

What to Wear: Winter Layers Are a Must

Today and Saturday will be frigid, especially with the wind chill. A thick winter coat, hat, gloves, and scarf are essential, and if you’re outside for extended periods, thermal layers will help keep you warm. Sunday and Monday bring some relief, but don’t pack away the winter gear just yet!
