Snowfall Warning

THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – A Snowfall Warning is now in effect for the communities of Pickle Lake and Cat Lake, with significant snowfall anticipated to impact the region beginning Sunday evening.

Snowfall Details

  • Expected Snowfall: 15 to 20 cm total accumulation.
  • Peak Snowfall Rates: 2 to 4 cm per hour, which will create challenging conditions.
  • Visibility Hazards: Reduced visibility expected in areas of heavy snowfall, with local blowing snow further limiting visibility.

Timing

Snowfall is expected to begin Sunday evening and continue overnight, tapering off by Monday morning.

Discussion

A system moving into far northern Ontario on Sunday will bring rain initially, transitioning to heavy snow by the evening as temperatures drop. Strong northeasterly winds, gusting up to 60 km/h, are forecasted to create blowing snow, resulting in difficult travel conditions with significantly reduced visibility at times.

Conditions are expected to improve Monday morning as snowfall tapers off and winds decrease.

Safety and Preparation

  • Travel: Avoid travel during peak snowfall hours if possible, as visibility may be reduced to near-zero in heavy snow and blowing snow.
  • Visibility: Drive cautiously, allowing extra time to reach destinations, and prepare for unexpected stops.
  • Preparation: Residents are advised to keep emergency supplies in vehicles, including warm clothing, blankets, and a flashlight.
