Police Investigating Sudden Death in Deer Lake

RED LAKE – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region and Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) are investigating a suspicious death that occurred in Deer Lake First Nation.

On May 1, 2022 at approximately 11:15 p.m. NAPS officers responded to an individual in distress. The person was transported to the local Nursing Station, where she was later pronounced deceased, despite life-saving measures.

The deceased has been identified as Vanessa KAKEKAGUMICK, age 30 of Deer Lake First Nation.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted by the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service to determine the cause of death.

Members of the North West Region OPP and NAPS are continuing to investigate, under direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario. Investigators believe there is no threat to public safety.
